What if we could return to a time when we knew each other differently? It’s not so certain if we can. Despite the distance that has grown between two former lovers, now friends, they have still managed to reunite over a collection of poetry that has informed and defined the back-and-forth of their entanglement.
In Joshua James and Jāzep Felkers’ debut collaboration, QUANTUM FLUKE, that exploration of timelines occurs in a nuanced and interactive way. Realistically, these poems are a conversation between two occasional adversaries, consistent caretakers of each other at distance. But in quanta, they exist as artifacts. A monument to a shared connection that moves in every direction at once and persists despite the estrangement of time passing.
Felkers will assert that he “want[s] to see [James] / in a new way.” But again and again, James will “lay there speechless [...] water / a desert town with tears.” Felkers says he “can relax a little knowing / it always works out in / the end…” but, do we believe him? Should James “figure out how many characters [he] needed / to say I love you back,” could a resolution be found?
That may be up to you, dear reader. QUANTUM FLUKE does not end with an answer. Truthfully, we haven’t found one either. But, perhaps you too can bear witness to what was an astral connection and remains an earthly commitment to friendly and collaborative love.
Enclosed is a collection of fourteen poems written by Felkers and James to and for each other over the course of their shared queer experience. Perhaps what once was spiritual can now be beautiful. Indeed, it was meaningful from the start and through the end. We hope you agree. Thank you for supporting queer art; your demonstration does not go unnoticed. It’s not a fluke you found this downloadable. Because, nothing really is…
QUANTUM FLUKE presents questions, not answers. A choose-your-own-adventure poetry zine, this downloadable is meant to be experienced in an order unique to each reader. Poems conclude with a question that will lead you down one of many sequences.
